Hiking and the olive harvest: autumn in the Alpes-Maritimes

9 min read · Nature & terroir · Alpes-Maritimes

In autumn, a single tree ties together the trails and the tables of the backcountry: the olive tree. As the harvest gets under way, its golden terraces become the loveliest thread of an escape. Let's follow it across the Alpes-Maritimes — from Grasse to the Roya valley — hiking on one side, new oil on the other.

The olive tree, the thread of the Alpes-Maritimes

Across the whole département, the olive tree shapes the landscape. It climbs in restanques — those dry-stone terraces patiently built into the hillsides — from the Grasse backcountry to the Paillon and Roya valleys. These low walls tell of centuries of labour and compose, in autumn, scenes of endless gentleness under the low, slanting light.

The reigning variety here is the Cailletier, better known as the "Nice olive". Small and delicate, it yields a mild, fruity oil protected by its own AOP designation. It is the olive you meet along the trails and on every fine table in the region.

The harvest, an autumn ritual

From autumn into the heart of winter, the olive groves come alive: nets are spread at the foot of the trees, branches are shaken and combed by hand. An unchanging ritual, passed down from generation to generation, which you still come across along the paths — and to which the mills give its full meaning.

This year promises to be especially generous: local growers are reporting a fine harvest and oil of great quality. One more reason to come and enjoy it straight from the source.

Our hikes through the olive groves

From west to east, here are a few routes where the olive tree keeps you company — from easy strolls to more demanding walks:

The Siagne gorges & the terraces of the Pays de Grasse

Easy to moderate · half-day · on Grasse's doorstep

A stone's throw from our guesthouse, the trails of Le Tignet, Spéracèdes and the Siagne valley wind between terraced olive groves and running water. The perfect first immersion — shaded and refreshing.

Tourrettes-sur-Loup and its hillsides

Easy · 2 to 3 h · Vence backcountry

A village of olives and violets, Tourrettes offers pretty loops between terraces and sea views. A gentle hike, perfect to combine with a wander through the perched village.

Sospel and the Bévéra valley

Moderate · full day · Nice backcountry

Further east, Sospel has always grown olives. The trails toward the Col de Castillon climb through old olive groves, with lovely views over this medieval town tucked into its green setting.

Breil-sur-Roya, land of olives

Moderate to demanding · full day · Roya valley

The olive capital of the Roya, Breil unfurls spectacular olive terraces along the river. The wilder walks around it reward the effort with end-of-the-world landscapes.

The mills and the new oil

You cannot talk of olive trees without pushing open the door of a mill. That is where the loop closes: after the walk, a tasting of the new oil, green and peppery, freshly pressed.

  • Around Grasse — the mills of Opio and the Brague villages (Châteauneuf, Le Rouret, Opio) are among the most renowned, just minutes from us.
  • Near Nice — the historic houses of the Nice olive carry on a centuries-old craft built around the Cailletier.
  • In the valleys — Sospel and Breil-sur-Roya have their own cooperative mills, as close as it gets to the growers.

Many offer tours and tastings in season, often marked by new-oil festivals in late autumn and winter — a chance to leave with a few bottles of the vintage.

🫒 Did you know?

The Nice olive is picked late, often fully ripe and almost black, which gives its oil that mild, barely bitter roundness so characteristic of the area — the opposite of the green, peppery oils of the South-West. A signature unique to the Alpes-Maritimes, best tasted on the spot to truly understand it.

  • When: from October to December, the harvest intensifies and the weather stays ideal for walking.
  • Gear: walking shoes, water and a windbreaker — backcountry mornings are cool.
  • On site: check the opening hours of mills and tastings, which vary with the progress of the harvest.
  • A typical day: a morning hike through the olive groves, a village lunch, then a mill visit in the afternoon to taste the new oil.

From Grasse, all these areas make easy day trips — and we will gladly point you to our favourite trails and mills on arrival.
